The law to ban importation of secondhand Fridges is being reviewed to ensure that importers and dealers in such imports are arrested and prosecuted.
The review has become necessary as the markets continue to be flooded with secondhand fridges which are known to consume three times more electricity than needed.
The law in its current state only allows for the seizure of such products while the importers go scot-free.
According to the Director of Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Climate Change at the Energy Commission, Kofi Agyarko, about 36,000 secondhand fridges have been seized adding that the law is being reviewed to ensure that the importer, the vessel, shipping line and vendors are prosecuted after their goods are seized.
He spoke to GBC’s Radio Ghana on the sidelines of the launch of ECOFRIDGES, a 25-million-dollar project to support Ghanaians acquire energy efficient cooling devices.
