President Akufo-Addo has reiterated his commitment to bring the perpetrators of the murder of Ahmed Suale to justice.
He, however, described the inability to find the perpetrators of the investigative journalist’s death despite police efforts as regretful, adding that the case will not be closed so long as he remains President.
The President said this when he graced the Ghana Journalists Association’s Dinner Night on Wednesday, December 22, 2022 in Accra.
“I continue to be deeply regretful that despite the unceasing best efforts of the Police, the perpetrators of the murder of Ahmed Suale are still at large. but I assure you that so long as I’m president, this dossier will not be closed until they are brought to justice.”
President Akufo-Addo commended the GJA for setting up a support fund to help journalists and pledged government support for the initiative.
“I applaud the GJA President and executive members for taking the bold step to set up the journalist support fund to help journalists who are attacked while performing their functions. I hereby pledge my personal and government support to this noble initiative as well as to creating an environment in which such attacks are minimal, if not eliminated.”
He expressed the government’s commitment to building a prosperous country and an open society.
“The government I lead remains committed to empowering the citizen, media, and civil society, so we can all play our role in realising our vision of building a progressive and prosperous Ghana, a Ghana beyond aid. As President of Ghana, I’m confident that the Ghanaian people will continue to exercise the right to free expression in all circumstances because of their determination to build a free, open society with accountable government, no matter the cost.”
On January 16, 2019, Ahmed Hussein-Suale, who had collaborated with the BBC, was shot dead by unidentified men on motorbikes near his family home in Accra.
