President John Mahama addressed citizens and dignitaries at the Jubilee House in Accra as Ghana marked its 69th Independence Day on 6 March.
The ceremony brought together former presidents, government officials, diplomats, traditional leaders, members of the security services, school children and youth to commemorate Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule in 1957.
In his speech, the President urged Ghanaians to honour the country’s history and the sacrifices of its founding leaders while working together to build a prosperous future.
“This is our story. This is our moment. We cannot speak of Ghana’s present without paying homage to our past,” he said.
He paid tribute to Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and acknowledged the role of past leaders and administrations in building the country’s democracy and institutions.
President Mahama said the government had taken steps over the past year to stabilise the economy, restore investor confidence and strengthen fiscal discipline.
He also announced that he has assented to the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, saying the policy will allow businesses and factories to operate across multiple shifts.
According to him, the initiative is expected to generate 1,000 new jobs across sectors including manufacturing, logistics, security and transportation.
The President also said the government is in the final stages of establishing a Women’s Development Bank to provide financing and support for women-led businesses.
He urged citizens to show discipline, integrity and patriotism, stressing that national progress depends on the collective efforts of all Ghanaians.
