Ghana begins process to permit farming and cultivation of Indian hemp on a commercial basis

Ghana has initiated processes to permit the farming and cultivation of Indian hemp or weed for commercial purposes. It has therefore laid in Parliament, the Narcotics Control Commission Amendment Bill, 2023.

The Supreme Court had earlier disagreed with the decision to grant license to grow cannabis, because in its view, there was no debate in Parliament on the Bill before its passage into law, as stipulated by Article 106 of the Constitution.

The new Amendment seeks to cure the basis for the Supreme Court decision. Government says the Bill is not meant to legalize the use of cannabis but to control its production for economic purposes.
