Madina-Adentan residents in Accra will Friday evening hold a vigil for all those who had died as a result of vehicle knock downs on the Madina-Adenta-Aburi Highway.

About 200 people are reported to have died crossing that stretch of road.

The latest to die was a young girl of West Africa Senior High School Thursday. Her death triggered protest by residents who burnt tyres sending thick dark clouds of smoke into the skies. The death of the lady has brought the situation to a head triggering the action of the youth, who planned a vigil for November 9.

The police reacted to the action by the youth by firing warning shots into the crowd along with tear gas to disperse the angry mob. From reports, a woman and her daughter were hit by a stray bullet, some video footage showed blood oozing from the head of a protester.

They have also planned a peace walk for Monday, November 12.  Since the start of 2018, about 200 people have been killed on the highway with six killed just within six days.  Government has indicated that budget allocation has been made for the resumption of work on the highway next week.

Residents who had had enough could not hide their anger anymore when a taxi at top speed on the six-lane highway knocked and killed a first-year student of the West Africa Senior High School which is located along the stretch.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apietu has led a high powered delegation to Adenta and Madina, a day after rioting in Adenta to calm tempers. All attention is now focused on uncompleted footbridges on the Madina-Adenta-Aburi Highway, increasingly notorious for such accidents.
