The Ghana Institute of Journalism turns 60 Tomorrow, October 16, 2019. The Institute  was established by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah initially as a training Institution of the Ministry of Information.

It is  now a fully fledged university  awarding its own degrees.

As the Institute celebrates its Diamond Jubilee, concerns have been raised about the lack of involvement by the University’s Alumni in the celebration.

This led to the cancellation of the school’s home coming last week.

Chairperson of the 60th Anniversary Committee, Dr. Lawrencia Agyapong told GBC Radio’s Nathaniel Nartey that , the Alumni have  to do more to promote their Alma matter. She said

“To tell you the truth, I would say that the alumni hasn’t done enough….with every celebration you have to be financially prudent and when you don’t see too many of the alumni coming foward to support, it becomes quite difficult.”

She said GIJ needs its alumni, and appealed for more support from them.

“We are hoping that with the grand durbar and the fund raising dinner and gala,  we will see the alumni taking their place in this esteemed institution….because we cannot tell the story of GIJ without the alumni.”

The Institute will hold a grand durbar at the school’s new site which is still under construction on its birthday, (Wednesday, October 16, 2019, and climax the celebrations with a dinner and fund raising event at the Round  Pavilion of the Trade Fair Center-La  where Ace musician Okyeame Kwame is expected to perform.
