Labor unions asked to institutionalize social protection schemes to support members

Panelists at the 12th National Development Forum in Accra have called on labor unions to institutionalize social protection schemes that would support their members in the event of any socio-economic shock after Covid-19.

The forum, which was organized by the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) was on the theme “The Future of Work in Post-COVID-19 Ghana.”

Minister of Employment and Labor Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, who chaired the forum said government and employers must ensure that all workers are enrolled onto social security schemes as well as other social insurance services in order to cushion them against any loss of incomes in situation such as COVID-19.

Mr Baffour Awuah said the challenges of the future of work were eminent and that COVID-19 had given them a fore taste of things to come.

Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, said the country’s ability to create decent jobs during the post COVID era is not likely to improve as many resources  may be channeled to improving the already existing establishments affected by the pandemic.

The Head of Economics Department, University of Ghana, Professor William Baah Boateng also spoke about the infrastructure gap in ICT and the need to invest in technology especially during this COVID-19 period.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, NDPC Professor Emerita Takyiwaa Manuh, reiterated that containing and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic has serious implication on Ghana’s development agenda.

She noted that, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic had challenged the people’s way to socialize and conduct their business.
