The Lead Consultant on Child Labour and forced labor of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe has called for consented effort to help address all forms of forced labor and abuse against children.

He said some children of school going age are engaged in activities during contact hours that affect their education, health and physical development. Mr Tagoe was speaking in Ho, at the opening of a three-day capacity building session for focal persons on modern slavery and child labor in the Volta Region.

The training of Focal persons on modern slavery and child labor is a capacity-building program for selected members of the 22 affiliated Unions of the Trade Union Congress, drawn from all the trade sectors to help address forced labor and child labor. It is also to equip members with the technical know-how to better handle forced labour related issues at the workplace. It is funded by the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO-Norway).

The lead Consultant on child labor and forced labor of the Trade Union Congress, Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe said, although children are encouraged to help with household chores and other activities, some parents end up abusing them thereby impeding the progress of the child.

Mr. Tagoe who is also the Deputy General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union urged employers not to subject their employees to abuse, but rather implement favorable working conditions for the development of the labor force and the country at large.

The Deputy Secretary of the Trade Union Congress, Joshua Ansah said the Union, which is the mouthpiece of workers, has the mandate to oppose all forms of exploitation associated with employment. He added that fighting forced labor, human trafficking and child labour is the surest way to protect and improve the working conditions of workers in the country.
