The University of Ghana (UG) on Thursday opened a week long book of condolence for the late former United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Kofi Annan for the University Community.
Busumuru Kofi Annan was also the Immediate past Chancellor of the University from 2008 to 2018.
The UG will also hold an evening of remembrance at the Great Hall and a pictorial exhibition at the Balm Library in honour of the late Mr Annan on September 7 and from Monday September 10 to Friday 14, 2018.
Signing in the book of condolence, Professor Yaw Twumasi, Chairman of the UG Council wrote: “Mr. Kofi Annan was a lifetime friend in many faces and his death is a great loss to Ghana, Africa and the World. He was a tireless promoter of peace and love in the world. May he have external rest”.
Professor Ebenezer O. Owusu, the Vice Chancellor of the UG wrote: “Ghana, Africa and the World have truly lost a gem. He was humble and peaceful. Mr Annan was a true blessing to his generation and the World at large. R.I.P!
Professor Florence Abena Dolphyne, Former and First Female Vice Chancellor of the UG wrote: “Mr Kofi Annan’s name will never be forgotten for the excellent way he made Ghana and Africa proud when he was the UN Secretary General. Always cool and collected, he handled every complex issue with wisdom. R.I.P”.
Madam Mercy Haizel Ashia, Registrar of the UG wrote: “We are grateful for the ten years that Mr Annan served with UG. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. We will miss you Sir”.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Madam Ashia said it was befitting to open a book of condolence in honour of Mr Annan for the University Community to demonstrate their love and respect for their former Chancellor.
The 80-year old Ghanaian diplomat served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006.
Mr. Annan died on Saturday August 18, 2018 after a short illness.
