Unauthorized structures including a shrine along the Odaw river on the Graphic Road in Accra have been pulled down as part of the Make Accra Work Again Campaign.

Occupants of the structures put up a defense when the bulldozer started the demolition saying they were not given prior notice ahead of the exercise.

Armed military men supervised the exercise which begun at 4 o’clock this morning.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey upon assumption of office started a campaign aimed at clearing some parts of the capital to pave the way for free flow of rainwater and pedestrian walkways.

This morning’s exercise started from the Obetsebi Lamptey circle through the Graphic road, Farisco, Kingsway, UTC, the business district to the Trades Union Congress head office. Corporate bodies on that stretch took part in the exercise.

The pavements and streets of Makola were free from women selling on them. The usual human traffic in between the markets was not visible as all the traders have been cleared.

Mr. Quartey said Ghana can only become like Dubai if hard political decisions are made.

Mr. Quartey said Kokompe is the next place earmarked for decongestion if the artisans there do not move by June ending as discussed with their Union.
