The Guantoahemmaa of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, Nana Adwoa Bene Beyeeman, has called for the localisation of ‘Year of Return’ to ignite interest of urban dwellers to return to their roots and support community development.

She said the success of the ‘Year of Return’ where Africans in the Diaspora trooped to Ghana, could be used as a tool to set an agenda for every Ghanaian to go back to their roots and communities to support local development.

“The Year of Return should not only be about Africans abroad returning home to visit their motherland, but should also be about Ghanaians who have made it in life and living in cities and towns going back to their roots to support development to empower its members, especially the youth,” she said.

The Guantoahemaa who is also the Nkosuohene of Wirenkyiren-Amanfrom, made the call at a ceremony where her family donated a six-bedroom semi-detached house to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) at Akyem-Asikam.

She described the ‘Year of Return’ as a novelty, and urged Ghanaians living in urban centres, cities and town to follow the concept and go back to their roots to support development.

She noted that it was not always about money, but returning home and contributing expertise to support development could serve as a motivation for the youth to strive for excellence in school and contribute to national development.
