President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to dualize the Wa–UDS City Centre Road as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion and improve mobility within the Upper West Regional capital.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Wa–Tumu–Han Road project in Guli on Tuesday November 11, 2025, President Mahama said the dualization will stretch from the Fire Service roundabout to the University for Development Studies (UDS) campus in Wa.
He explained that the project will help decongest the city, beautify the area, and improve road safety. “We are dualizing the Wa–UDS City Centre Road to make movement easier, reduce traffic, and give Wa a modern urban look,” he said.
The President added that the road works will include bridge construction over the Kanyegbe and Gbekyilewu rivers, the installation of modern drainage and culvert systems to reduce flooding, and safety features such as signage, lighting, and pedestrian crossings.
He emphasized that the project is part of the government’s broader Big Push initiative, aimed at upgrading more than 260 kilometres of roads across the Upper West Region to boost trade, agriculture, education, and healthcare.
President Mahama also assured that the construction will create thousands of jobs and use mainly local materials and expertise.
