The President, John Dramani Mahama, has told the global community that Africa must take full control of its natural resources to secure the well-being of its citizens.

Speaking at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the United Kingdom on Thursday, September 25, 2025, President Mahama said the days of giving vast concession areas to foreign interests for exploitation must come to an end. He stressed that Africa can no longer continue to be seen as poor while its resources are controlled by outsiders.

The president said Africa’s sovereignty over its resources is key at a time when global insecurity has forced many countries to increase defense budgets, while humanitarian aid continues to decline. He noted that global humanitarian support has dropped by about 40 percent since July 2024.

President Mahama also linked Africa’s economic independence to restoring dignity and rewriting the continent’s story. “We are tired of not being represented in ways that reveal the richness and complexity of our history,” he said, adding that Africa must no longer be defined by poverty but by its potential and achievements.

The President concluded by urging stronger empowerment of women and girls to ensure inclusive growth and a better future for Africa.
