The President, John Dramani Mahama, has directed the use of locally produced poultry and livestock in the school feeding programme.

According to him, the country is committed to building a Ghana that consumes what it produces.

Speaking during the sod-cutting of the meat and poultry processing facility on Thursday, November 27, 2025, in Bechem, Sunyani, President Mahama highlighted that the facility would create jobs for the youth through rural industrialisation.

He added that he would soon launch the schools’ poultry and livestock project, in which schools would be encouraged to have farms for self-consumption and export purposes.

President Mahama also announced that the facility is one of Ghana’s anchor programmes designed to reposition the country as a competitive player in the poultry and livestock industry.

It includes a modern feed processing plant to produce high-quality, affordable feed, a hygienic meat processing unit equipped to meet both domestic and export standards, a training academy for young farmers, and warehouses to safeguard the feed.

President Mahama further stressed the job creation the facility would enhance, citing that, “from production to processing to packaging to distribution and then to retailing, thousands of jobs would be created for the youth”.

He concluded by expressing gratitude to the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, and his team for seeing to it that the project was completed successfully. He also reiterated that the country’s goal is to significantly reduce poultry imports, hence the need to “eat Ghana”.
