President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Inspector-General of Police and security personnel for the significant improvement in security in the Upper East Region.

Addressing the Resetting Ghana Citizens’ Engagement in Bolgatanga, President Mahama noted that incidents of motorbike snatching, armed robbery and other crimes had reduced significantly.

He also welcomed the relative calm in Bawku, expressing hope that sustained peace would restore the area’s status as a major commercial centre and encourage residents who left to return.

“The Upper East Region is safer now than it was before,” he said.

President Mahama announced a GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund, with priority given to roads, bridges and healthcare infrastructure.

“We want to improve the road network and bridges in the Bawku area so that traders and farmers can move their goods and services easily. We will also improve healthcare in the area,” he said.

He said work had already begun on some township roads and health facilities, while government plans to complete an Agenda 111 hospital and construct another hospital in Bawku.

The President also commended the traditional rulers and people of Bawku for their efforts towards sustaining peace.

“Bawku is finally calm. The guns have stopped sounding, and people are beginning to go about their normal business,” the President stated.
