The Majority Leader in Parliament and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, has assured Ghanaians that he will live up to responsibilities in his new position as Acting Vice Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

He said his election to that enviable position is a plus for Ghana on the global scene, adding that he would make meaningful contributions towards good governance, democracy and human rights among nations under the Commonwealth.

Mr. Kyei Mensah Bonsu gave the assurance, after scores of residents in Kumasi, particularly his constituents from Suame thronged the Kumasi Airport to welcome and congratulate him on his election by the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

GBC’s Razak Baba reports that among the crowd that had thronged the Kumasi Airport to receive and congratulate the Majority Leader, were Chiefs in the Suame Constituency, Assembly Members, NPP supporters and sympathisers.

Mr. Kyei-Mensah Bonsu was elected Acting Vice Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association by its Executive Committee in July 2021.

Mr. Kyei Mensah Bonsu, who represented the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association from the Africa Region, contested the position with Gary Browniee from New Zealand.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is an organisation that works to support good governance, democracy and human rights.

The Majority Leader received a tumultuous welcome from the crowd amidst drumming and dancing.

Addressing the media later, Mr. Kyei Mensah Bonsu assured Ghana that he would live up to the responsibilities of his new position.

“I appreciate enormously what people have done to acknowledge the little that we have been able to do to help promote democracy in Ghana and also grow democracy in Africa. African Parliamentarians met in Kenya and it was the Kenyan Speaker who submitted my name, that I should represent Africa on behalf of the Commonwealth countries in Africa. It was overwhelming, 16 Regions voting for me as against 6 who voted for the person from New Zealand. It means that not only what we have been doing in Ghana has been appreciated, but also been appreciated by all from far and near.”

Mr. Kyei Mensah Bonsu was later presented with his portraits by the Greater Kumasi Assemblymen Association, Ashanti Regional Coordinators of the New Patriotic Party and the Breman Electoral area.
