The police have arrested a man, identified as Isaac Adonteng, for the alleged murder of his 13-year-old daughter, Celestine Adonteng, at Kokrobite in the Weija area of Accra.
According to a police statement, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect, a 54-year-old mason, subjected his daughter to severe physical abuse using a cane, a metal pipe, and other objects after accusing her of taking food meant for her younger sibling.
Despite the seriousness of the injuries inflicted, the suspect allegedly failed to seek medical attention for the child and instead confined her to a room. Acting on a complaint, police officers visited the residence and found the girl unconscious. She was rushed to the Police Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Items retrieved from the scene—including a cutlass and a metal pipe—are believed to be the weapons used in the assault.
The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned parents and guardians against the use of excessive force in disciplining children, emphasizing that such actions constitute criminal behaviour and can lead to tragic outcomes.
Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death are ongoing.
