Some selected market women have been trained on how to deal with cases of domestic and sexual based violence at the markets.

This follows statistics which show that gender based violence, particularly, domestic violence is on the increase.

In 2016, almost 240 cases of domestic violence were recorded as against 311 in 2017. Cases of assault increased from 420 in 2016 to 520 in 2017. Defilement increased from 722 to 793.

Head porters top the list as most of them are victims of rape and abuse at bus stations where they usually use as homes.

Speaking at a ceremony at the Agbogbloshie market to outdoor paralegals and an office for such complaints, the Deputy Minister of Gender and Social Protection, Freda Prempeh, said the seeming increase in sexual violence is a worry and everything must be done to stop it.
