The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) says it has taken 1,055 migrant street beggars off the streets of Accra and Kumasi as part of an operation to identify and deal with undocumented foreign nationals.
The exercise was carried out following a directive from the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, to address the presence of undocumented migrants and street beggars in major cities.
According to the GIS, the operation is also intended to tackle concerns surrounding street begging and human trafficking, particularly in densely populated urban areas.
The migrants identified as being in the country without valid documentation are currently undergoing processing for repatriation to their respective countries.
The exercise forms part of wider efforts by the Ghana Immigration Service to enforce immigration laws and ensure that foreign nationals residing in Ghana have the required documentation.
