Minister commends President Akufo-Addo for prevailing peace in Northern Region

The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed has commended the Akufo-Addo led government for measures put in place to ensure that peace prevails in the region.

Taking his turn at the Weekly Nation Building Updates held at the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra, the Regional Minister said the Northern region has in the past been noted for being hostile in terms of security and has witnessed intermittent violent conflicts.

He said that with the bold, resilient and focused leadership of President Akufo-Addo, the Region currently enjoys a satisfactory level of peace and has not recorded any form of violence for the past three years and ten months.

He said the performance of the outstanding funerals of late Ya Naa Yakubu Andani II and Ya Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV and the enskinment of a New Ya Naa – Yaa Naa Mahama Abubakari II are some measures that have contributed in achieving peace and stability in the region.

He added that the New Northern Region now has a re-constituted Regional House of Chiefs with the New Yaa Naa as President of the Northern Regional House.

In handling security problems in Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo, he said measures have been put in place to forestall any violent clashes, open confrontations and distraction of property.

He lauded the security agencies, youth groups and political parties for their efforts in promoting peace.

On developmental projects on-going in the Region under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo, Mr Salifu Saeed said the region has had its fair share of Government’s flagship programme which include the implementation of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy, One-District-One-Factory (1D1F) initiative, Planting For Food and Jobs (PFJ) among others.

On Agriculture, he said 279,767 farmers comprising 246,467 males and 33,300 females have benefited from government’s Planting For Food and Jobs programme.

He said, the Planting For Food and Jobs and Rearing for Food and Jobs programmes have  impacted positively on the socio-economic lives of various households.

On education he said 31 Senior High Schools (SHS) are benefiting from government’s free education policy.

The Weekly Nation Building Updates, under the theme ‘Rebuilding of the Ghanaian Economy’ is to provide detailed updates on measures taken to revamp the country’s economy.

This week’s update was addressed by Regional Ministers of the Western, Central, Volta, Northern and Bono Regions.

The current Northern Region is delineated into 16 Administrative areas composed of 1 Metropolis, 5 Municipalities and 10 districts with an estimated population of 2.4 million. The Region has 18 constituencies.
