The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has launched the Canoe Identification Card as part of measures to collect records of functional canoes and to streamline activities of the fisherfolk.

The identification system is part of moves by authorities to digitise operations of the fishing Industry.

The Canoe Identification Card is being implemented by the Fisheries Commission in collaboration with the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council and other stakeholders to make the fishing industry more profitable and sustainable.

Launching the programme at Keta in the Volta Region, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye was hopeful that the card will help in the establishment of a robust fishing industry since government will be equipped with the required resources towards enhancing the sector.

She called on stakeholders in the Fisheries sector to comply with rules and regulations and the Fisheries Commission to ensure effective monitoring and law enforcement.
