Mixed reactions trail coronavirus scare in Ghana

A cross section of Ghanaians have called on the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to consider banning public transport in Ghana temporarily to minimize the spread of the coronavirus.

The call comes hours after the President ordered the closure of all schools and universities in the country, as a protective means of containing the spread of the virus.

Commercial vehicles are mostly packed and there are fears it could lead to a wholesale spread of the virus should an infected person board.

Most people GBC’s Radio Ghana spoke to also appealed to traders who have taken advantage of the situation to sell perfumes as hand sanitizers to desist from the practice.

Meanwhile, some Trotro drivers have kicked against the call for the suspension of commercial transport operations for economic reasons.

On March 12, the Ministry of Health broke the news of the first two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country. The news was a shock to the nation as it was obvious that the country was not expecting such soon.

Most Ghanaians were disappointed at the government for not taking grounding steps earlier to prevent the disease from reaches the shores of Ghana.

Unfortunately, four new cases were announced again March 15, 2020, making it a total of six confirmed cases with over hundred suspected cases.

The University of Ghana soon afterwards announced a closure of the Institution as one of the suspects is said to be a student who returned from America and tested positive the virus after a week.

As GBC’s Radio Ghana spoke to a cross section of the public, some expressed worry and ask for a ban on trotro as a major means of the spread of the virus.

Amazingly, it was revealed that some vendors are deceitfully selling perfumes and other cosmetics to the public as alcohol based sanitizers.

Also, some students expressed their views about the suspension of schools by government.

At this point, it is advisable that we all heed to the safety precautions of washing our hands regularly, use sanitizers as often as possible, avoid shaking of hands and contact with people with flulike symptoms as the country prays to God against an outbreak of the disease.
