More than 1000 perish from road accidents as of August 2023

More than one thousand people have died from road crashes across the country, as of the end of August this year.

Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority, NRSA, David Osafo Adonteng, announced this at a Stakeholder’s Engagement organized by the Motor Traffic and Transport Division, MTTD of the Ghana Police Service for the Bono, Ahafo and Bono East Regions on the Automated Traffic Rules Enforcement System known as ‘Traffitech-GH, at Abesim, in Sunyani.

Traffitech-GH is an automated system developed by the Ghana Police Service to enforce road traffic laws and regulations to improve road safety in Ghana.

It is code-named; Police Invisible Eye is Watching. The system uses cameras and sensors to automatically take a picture and videos of vehicles that flout road traffic laws and regulations such as speeding and jumping red lights. It seeks to increase compliance with road traffic laws and regulations to reduce road traffic crashes, deaths and injuries.

The Bono Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Gyamera Oklu, expressed delight at the introduction of Traffitech-GH, which he noted is operating successfully in countries such as France, the USA, South Africa, Morocco, Rwanda, among others.

He said the introduction of Traffitech-Gh is to change road user misbehaviour which includes traffic light violations, vehicle insurance, over speeding, wearing of seatbelts, and using of communication devices while driving, among others.

Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority, David Osafo Adonteng, said road safety should be a matter of concern to all Ghanaians as accidents are claiming too many lives.

Director of Research and Education at the MTTD, Chief Superintendent Alexander Obeng, said from January to August this year more than one thousand people have been arrested for flouting road safety rules.

He said out of the number, 11 were sentenced with the rest fined a total of one million, six hundred and forty-eight thousand Cedis.

He said the Traffitech-GH initiative is part of efforts by the Police to tackle road accidents and ensure road safety.

He said persons who flout the traffic law will be fined while severe cases will be referred to the courts. The system will start operating by the close of this year.
