The Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament and MP for Efutu, Alex Afenyo-Markin has filed an urgent question directed at the Minister for Works and Housing seeking to find out when the Blekusu Sea Defence project phase two in the Volta Region will commence.

In an attempt to deflate suggestions that the government has been slow in providing relief to the more than 4000 residents in communities affected by tidal waves in southern Volta, Mr. Afenyo-Markin held a news conference where he asserted that the residents were engaged in massive sand weaning which is contributing to their current predicament.

He showed a picture of heavy duty trucks lined up at a beach where sand weaning was going on and insisted that that was Keta. That picture has since been proven to be fake as it was not coming from Keta but rather Sierra Leone. Mr. Afenyo-Markin has since come under heavy criticism, with some suggesting he has been insensitive.

At a news conference in Parliament house on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 Mr. Afenyo-Markin who described himself as a son of ”Anloland”, said he is concerned about finding a permanent solution to the problem of tidal waves wreaking havoc on his people. He said he will hold the Minister to his Works, when he gives the answer to his question and ensure that the Finance Minister releases the funds for the project.

Apology

Mr. Afenyo-Markin used the opportunity to apologise for the fake picture he used in his last news conference. He said he was misled by a research publication which attached that photo to the article as coming from Keta.

” The site has since pulled down the article, and I find it expedient to retract and apologize for the error”.
