The Vice-President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs in Sunyani Alhaji Mohammed Karifala has appealed to the Ghana Health Service to assist Muslims by immediately releasing their corpses for burial.

Alhaji Karifala who is also the ‘Daffi’ Chief within the Sunyani Zongo community explained that it would enable the families and leadership of the Muslim communities to fulfill one of the vital requirements of the Islamic religion.

According to him, the burden of mortuary fee payment and cost of the autopsy could be avoided because sometimes the dead might not have relatives in the community.

Alhaji Karifala made the appeal in Sunyani after the inauguration of a 17-member Council of Zongo Chiefs within the Sunyani Municipality.

He expressed worry about the way their corpses are being kept at the morgue for more than 24 hours.

Alhaji Karifala pleaded with the Ghana Health Service to issue a directive to hospitals nationwide to release their corpses as soon as death occurs for speedy burial and funeral rites in fulfillment of the customs and traditions of the Islamic religion.

In a speech, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, Justina Owusu-Banahene, advised Zongo youths to emulate the exemplary lives of their elders to contribute to the maintenance of peace in the Municipality.
