Muslims begin Festival of breaking of fast

By Ubaida Awudu

Today is the 1st of Shawwal according to the Islamic Calendar which marks the beginning of the EID-UL-FITR.

Ramadan this year ended yesterday, at 29 days instead of 30 days because it’s a Lunar year.

EID-UL-FITR is an Arabic word which means ‘Breaking of fast’, celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims all over the world celebrate this event with much fervor. They also give out alms to the needy termed ‘Zakatul-fitr’ before Eid prayers.

Muslims in Ghana will observe the EID prayer tomorrow, as per directive by the National Chief Imam, Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.
