The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has disclosed that 70 excavators confiscated from illegal mining operators will be transferred to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support a nationwide desilting campaign aimed at tackling recurring flooding across the country.

He explained that the machinery, seized during anti-galamsey operations, will be repurposed for public benefit as part of the government’s efforts to improve drainage infrastructure and mitigate the effects of flooding, particularly in major urban areas such as Accra.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, June 10, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak revealed that the government has earmarked 70 excavators seized from illegal mining operations for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support desilting efforts nationwide.

The Minister said the equipment would be officially handed over next week to enable NADMO to clear drains across the country as part of measures to reduce flooding. He stressed, however, that maintaining clean surroundings remains a shared responsibility and is essential to addressing the problem sustainably.

The remarks were made in response to questions in Parliament regarding government interventions to address Accra’s persistent flooding challenges and improve environmental sanitation.

Flooding continues to pose a major challenge in many parts of Ghana, especially in Accra, where heavy rainfall frequently leads to property damage, displacement of residents, and disruptions to business and economic activities.

Experts have consistently attributed urban flooding to factors such as clogged drainage systems, improper waste disposal, and unchecked development along waterways, all of which hinder the free flow of stormwater and increase flood risks.
