A sombre atmosphere has enveloped the Ayawaso East Constituency as family members, constituents, political leaders, and dignitaries gather today, Monday, January 5, 2026, to bid a final farewell to the late Member of Parliament, Hon. Naser Toure Mahama.
The veteran legislator passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a short period of illness. In keeping with Islamic tradition, his burial is taking place less than 24 hours after his passing, drawing mourners from Nima, Kanda, and surrounding communities.
According to the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso North, Yussif Jajah, high-level intervention from President John Dramani Mahama ensured that all administrative processes were expedited, allowing the body to be released to the family on Sunday evening to facilitate burial arrangements.
Janazah prayers are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. today at the Ayawaso East Constituency Office on the Kanda Highway. The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, is expected to lead the prayers before the body is conveyed to the Madina Cemetery for interment.
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has put security arrangements in place to manage the expected heavy traffic and large crowds around the Kanda Highway and the Nima–Mamobi enclave.
Hon. Naser Toure Mahama, popularly known as McNaza, was a fourth-term Member of Parliament and a senior legislator of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He had represented the Ayawaso East Constituency continuously since January 7, 2013, after first winning the seat in the 2012 general elections.
During his time in Parliament, the late MP played key legislative roles. He served as Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee and was a member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee.
In the 2024 general elections, Hon. Mahama Naser Toure was re-elected with a decisive mandate, polling 22,139 votes, representing 70.85 per cent, against his closest opponent, who secured 9,110 votes, equivalent to 29.15 per cent.
Born on March 17, 1965, Hon. Naser Toure Mahama hailed from Nima in Accra, in the Greater Accra Region. He received his secondary education at West Africa Senior High School before proceeding to Central University College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing in 1987. He later earned a Diploma in Governance from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and an MBA from Doshisha University in Japan.
Beyond politics, the late legislator had extensive experience in the private sector. He served as Managing Director of Aminasei Oil Company in Accra from 1993 to 2011 and was associated with OTA Forex Bureau between 2001 and 2003, among other professional engagements.
Widely regarded as a grassroots leader, Hon. Naser Toure Mahama was noted for his strong focus on urban renewal, youth empowerment, and addressing the development needs of Zongo communities.
He was a Muslim, married with children, and was respected for successfully combining business experience with dedicated legislative service in his representation of the Ayawaso East Constituency. His sudden death has shocked Parliament, party supporters, and residents of Ayawaso East, as the nation mourns the loss of a seasoned legislator and community leader.
