The New Juaben North Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region, with support from the Ghana Prisons Service and Ghana Police Service, has organized a cleanup exercise at Effiduase and its environs to mark this month’s National Sanitation Day in the municipality.
The exercise in the municipality, which was led by the New Juaben North Municipal Chief Executive, Samuel Adongo, also saw the participation of New Juaben North NADMO officers, representatives from the Effiduase Traditional Council, some community members, and some prison inmates.
The exercise includes sweeping of the streets, weeding of bushy areas, desilting, cleaning, and dredging of choked gutters from the Effiduase Prisons junction through the Asokore traffic light to the Ghana Senior High School junction.
In an interview with GBC News after the cleanup exercise, the New Juaben North Municipal Chief Executive, Samuel Adongo, entreated all constituents to take cleaning as a responsibility and regularly clean their environment and frontages to help make New Juaben North one of the cleanest municipalities in the Eastern Region.
He commended security officers, especially the police and the prison officers, for guiding the prison inmates to participate effectively in the exercise.
Mr. Adongo called on the Assembly members in the Municipality to help clean communities within their electoral areas as their performance will be rated based on sanitation situation in their electoral areas.
The MCE also served a word of caution to the public to desist from burning of refuse in the municipality adding that toxics emanating from burning of refuse is causing numerous health implications to people.
The Deputy New Juaben North Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Joyce Appiah, described the exercise as a success, adding that they used the exercise to educate participants, households, and shop owners on basic sanitation.
She bemoaned the low patronage of community members which could partly be due to numerous funerals on the day.
An appeal was made to the traditional authorities to urge their communities to observe the National Sanitation Day, which is the first Saturday of every month, in order for the day not to coincide with funerals to ensure massive participation in the exercise.
