New utility tariffs will affect cost of doing business – AGI and Hoteliers Association

The announcements of 27.15 and 21.55 percent increment in Utility tariffs has been described as over burdening and untimely, due to the current economic challenges. Business owners predict huge losses and possible collapse.

President of Hoteliers Association of Ghana, Dr. Ackah Nyamike, said the hotel business will be affected adversely by the increase in water and electricity tariffs.

In an interview with JoyNews, Dr. Nyamike cautioned that there is the need to look at how to manage cost of businesses and reduce the consumptions of these utilities to avoid another increment of rates at hotels.

Klenz Tsonam Akpeloo with the Association Ghana Industries (AGI) said the timing of the increase in utilities is a problem, and will affect the cost of doing business.

Some residents from Cape Coast believe the timing of the increment in utility is inappropriate.

They are therefor calling on government to suspend it for now and allow implementation to start from January next year.

They also appealed to government to reduce the tariffs from the current rate to about 5 to 10 percent.
