The National Identification Authority, (NIA), has dismissed rumors that the national identification card will be used as a means of identification for the 2020 elections.

Addressing a press conference in Tamale on Thursday, the CEO of the NIA, Professor Ken Atafuah, said the authority is only mandated to develop a biometric register and issue the identity cards.

He said he has no idea of any plan to replace the voter’s ID card with the biometric NIA card.

The registration begins across the Northern, North East and Savannah regions Today and lasts for 21 days.

About three thousand staff have been recruited and trained to carry out the exercise.

Professor Ken Atafuah disclosed that, the registration exercise will take place across 750 centers in the 28 districts of the three regions.

He emphasized that, the exercise is for Ghanaian citizens and warned foreigners to stay away.

Prof. Ken Atafuah also appealed to citizens to protect Ghana’s boundaries to keep foreigners away.

He explained that, the primary documents for the registration are a birth certificate or a valid Ghanaian passport.

However, Ghanaian citizens without these documents will still be able to register with guarantee from a relative or two community members.
