The  National Identification Authority (NIA) is set to begin its mass registration for the Ghana card for citizens who are 15 years old and above in the Volta Region.

In all the NIA has earmarked 350 registration centres across all the 18 districts and municipal assemblies in the region for the exercise which will start from Monday, July 22, and end on Thursday, August 22, this year.

Volta Region is the second region to go through the National Identification Authority’s mass registration exercise after it was conducted in the Greater Accra Region, preceded by a pilot project in some part of the country and some institutional registration.

At a media briefing ahead of the exercise next week, the Executive Secretary of the NIA, Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah gave the assurance that his outfit is adequately prepared to ensure the exercise is carried out smoothly without logistical and technical constraints.

He however, called on Ghanaians living in the Volta Region to safeguard the pride of the country’s citizenship by exposing foreigners who would want to be registered for the Ghana card.

Prof. Attafuah emphasised that Chapter three of the 1992 Constitution clearly defines who a Ghanaian is and that any citizen who aids or vouch for a foreigner to acquire the Ghana Card is a criminal and shall be punished by the law.

He also cautioned staff of the Authority not to engage in any unlawful act during the registration exercise failure of which shall attract the necessary sanctions.

The Ghana Card is a dual interface smart card with world class technical features, which can be used for many purposes in the country as well as other West African countries.

It is valid for ten years after which it could be renewed at a fee.  Applicants are required to provide enough evidence of their Ghanaian nationality to be registered and issued with a Ghana Card.
