Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has rejected claims that the government influenced the decision of the Electoral Commission’s Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr Bossman Asare, to resign from his position.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu’s remarks come amid speculation that Dr Asare’s resignation from the Electoral Commission may have been prompted by political pressure or influenced by the current administration.
The Minister dismissed the claims, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the resignation do not indicate any form of government interference.
He emphasised that the Constitution clearly outlines the procedures for removing Electoral Commission officials and noted that those processes were not initiated in this case.
According to him, any effort to remove a commissioner from office must adhere strictly to the constitutional framework, adding that previous cases involving Electoral Commission members were handled in accordance with the established provisions.
Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, June 15, 2026, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said Dr Asare had personally informed President John Dramani Mahama of his decision to step down through an official letter.
He rejected suggestions that the resignation was influenced by external pressure, stressing that the legal framework governing the removal of Electoral Commission officials is clearly defined.
“There is no basis for such claims because nothing of that nature occurred. The procedure for removing a member of the Commission is explicitly outlined in law. Dr Bossman Asare, on his own accord, wrote to the President expressing his intention to leave office on the specified date, and that is exactly what transpired,” he said.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu further disclosed that consultations are underway to appoint a replacement for Dr Asare, adding that the process will strictly adhere to the constitutional and legal requirements governing appointments to the Electoral Commission.
