Residents of Frafraha in the Greater Accra region still lack access to potable water. Most of them have resorted to boreholes or buying water from tankers and vendors.

No water for residents of Frafraha in Greater Accra

These were revealed when members of the Ghana WASH Journalists Network, visited some communities in Accra to assess the water situation as part of activities to mark World Water Day.

Some residents who spoke to GBC News say they have to spend extra to buy sachet or bottled water to drink or cook, as they cannot use those from the boreholes or vendors.

Francisca Quainoo visited the Community and says the sentiments by residents of Frafraha confirm the outcomes of the 2021 Population and Housing Census which shows an over reliance on sachet and bottled water for drinking and cooking.

Per the census data thirty-seven-point-four percent of households in the general population use sachet water for cooking and drinking.

The figures are believed to be more in the Communities like Frafraha. It said more than 15% of people in such urban areas rely on sachet and bottled water because water from vendors and the Ghana water Company is unreliable and sometimes unclean.

Some residents of Frafraha spoke to GBC news about their challenges with water.

A Vendor for the Ghana Water Company, Evelyn Attah complained of not having regular supply of water from GWCL for the Community.

She said the Company does not supply her with water on a daily basis. This is because, GWCL supplies water to other communities which according to her is worrying because of the increase in demand for water by her customers.

The National Coordinator of WASH, Justice Lee Adoboe, hoped the exercise will draw the attention of government and stakeholders to improve access to potable water in such areas.
