The Overlord of Dagbon who doubles as President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, Ya Na Abukari Mahama has decided to set up a committee to look into the alleged sale of government and public lands particularly within the Tamale metropolis for private purposes.

He said the issue is becoming a problem adding that the relative peace being enjoyed in the region cannot be compromised and urged the people in the region to exercise restraint as he takes steps to resolve the issue.

Ya Na Abukari said this at the Second General Meeting of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs in Tamale.

There have been growing concerns among the people of the region particularly Tamale Metropolis about the sales of government lands to private developers.

It is alleged that the Aboabo Timber Market has been sold while those occupying the place and engaged in Timber business have been served notice to vacate the area.

Though the Lands Commission has come out to deny such claims, tensions are rife as residents are growing impatient.

It is for this reason that the President of the Regional House Chiefs, NdanYa Na Abukari Mahama is taking steps to address the situation.

In a speech read for him, he said Dagbon has enjoyed relative peace for the past three years and counting and cautioned that he will not countenance any acts that will undermine the peace in Dagbon and Nanum Traditional areas.

The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ebenezer Kojo Kum, said the chieftaincy institution is a revered one and therefore chiefs should uplift and uphold the integrity of the institution. He however bemoaned the existence of chieftaincy and land disputes.

The Second General Meeting of the house saw the swearing-in of five paramountcies to the Regional House of Chiefs.

They include Nanton, Gushegu, Yelzoli, Kwor, Karaga and Tolon. The House also elected the Chief of Gushegu, NaaAbdulaiShitobu to replace the late NaaHamidu at the National House of Chiefs.
