The PRO of the Ghana National Fire Service, Ellis Robinson Okoe says about 300 containers have been destroyed in the fire that gutted the Odawna market at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra Wednesday dawn.

In his account, he said the Fire Station had a distress call around 2:20 a.m. and in response, the Station deployed personnel and fire tenders to the scene. Upon reaching the scene, the officers requested re-enforcement from other stations to assist in quenching the fire.

He said, “fire officers had difficulty dealing with the fire because most of the entrances of the containers had been blocked and all the containers had been locked. Since they are unable to get inside, they had to unlock the containers one after the other so they douse the fire. Personnel from the fire service got to the scene, the entrance of the market had been blocked, making it impossible for the fire tender to get in.”

“I restocked my shop on Monday ahead of the Christmas festivity only for the fire to destroy everything on Wednesday,” a victim told GBCGHANAONLINE.

“I have lost everything to the fire,” he added.

Another trader also indicated how she accessed a loan of ¢500,00 to restock only for her goods to be destroyed by the fire.
