Metro Mass Transit Limited is operating far below its full fleet capacity due to maintenance issues, with only 115 buses routinely running on routes, according to Managing Director, Cesar Kale.

He revealed that the gap between operational and routed buses comes down to routine breakdowns that take vehicles off the road.

“We realised that we couldn’t route all 325 buses because of maintenance demands. Some were just issues with the tyre, some breaks and all those things. And because of that, some were packed”.

As a result, the company typically runs 115 buses daily, with the number sometimes dropping lower when multiple vehicles break down simultaneously.

“Everyday we route just 115 buses. Sometimes, we route just 80, 90 or 100 because there are times when we have about eight or so cars breaking down at the same time,” Mr. Kale said.

According to him, when he assumed office, 227 of the company’s buses were unserviceable and could not be repaired, while 98 were serviceable.

“When I took over Metro Mass as Managing Director, 227 of the buses were unserviceable meaning we could not repair them and 98 were serviceable,” he said in an interview on ‘Current Agenda’ on GTV.

Metro Mass Transit is a state-owned public transport operator that serves urban and intercity routes across Ghana. The company has faced recurring challenges with aging fleets and maintenance funding in recent years.
