A programme dubbed “Operation Clean Your Frontage” has taken off in Accra. It is mainly to create awareness on the need for Ghanaians to keep their environment clean.
The exercise is also to rid the city of filth and keep a clean environment at all times.
As part of the campaign, people hawking on the pavements were cleared and structures erected on government lands demolished.
In an interview with GBC News, Leader of the Operation Clean Your Frontage at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Alhaji Ismail, said the aim of the exercise is to ensure that people keep the city clean and discourage people from erecting structures and occupying government land.
”Nobody will be allowed to take over government property without permission”, he noted.
Meanwhile, the hawkers whose structures were demolished on the pavements said they were not given any notice to move.
According to them, they were only informed about the clean-up campaign. They were therefore surprised about the demolition exercise.
