Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr Ziblim Iddi Barri is calling on Ghanaians not to look down on their indigenous languages but hold them in high esteem.

He described the attitude of Ghanaians towards local languages as appalling, stressing that parents need to encourage their children to speak the local language which gives them an identity.

Dr. Barri was speaking at SANEGBAA 2020.

SANEGBAA which means “conversation” in the Ga language, is an event designed to commemorate International Mother Language Day.

In Ghana, the celebration of International Mother Language Day has not been given the needed attention. This is as a result of the perceived lack of government commitment coupled with poor attitude of Ghanaians towards their indigenous languages.

Another is the issue of policy to promote indigenous languages for national development.

In an address, the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Art and Culture, Dr. Ziblim Iddi Barri urged Ghanaians to use their local languages since when you talk to a person in his own language,  it is received in his heart.

Director of Bureau of Ghana Languages, William Boateng said our local languages should be spoken frequently in order to avoid the extinction of the language.

Multi-language musician Amanzeba advised Ghanaians to avoid adopting foreign expressions because it destroys the authenticity of the various local languages.
