The Pharmacy Council in the Upper West region has presented 41 boxes of assorted medicines to the Wa Central Prison.

The donation, which was in response to a request, was also intended to show appreciation to the Ghana Prisons Service for its efforts in reforming and rehabilitating convicts for reintegration into Society.

The medicines were on display at the presentation ceremony.

The Upper West Regional Manager of the Pharmacy Council, Hafiz Mohammed Yahaya made the presentation on behalf of the Council. He told the gathering that the Registrar of the Pharmacy Council, who is very keen on health promotion activities, gave the green light for the release of medical supplies to the prison authorities in Upper West for the inmates of the Wa Central Prison.

He identified some of the medicines donated as injectables, antibiotics, and antifungals that can tackle a wide range of medical conditions. Mr. Yahaya indicated that he was sure the drugs would be of great help to the prisoners.

The Upper West Regional Commander of Prisons, ADP Joseph Damolbil Miyella, who received the gift, thanked the donors, saying the Wa Central Prison was in dire need of medicines and he was compelled to appeal to the Pharmacy Council for assistance.

He observed that the package would go a long way towards solving the health needs of the inmates. ADP Miyella was hopeful that the Pharmacy Council will extend a hand of support to other prison establishments when the need arises.

The Public Relations Officer of the Wa Central Prison, DSP Joseph Kpiriko was so much excited about the donation and described it as God-sent but said they have a challenge of feeding the inmates with GH¢1.80 a day for each inmate, emphasising that the amount is woefully inadequate.
