Boat Operators and Fishermen at Tongor Dzemeni and its environs in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region are appealing to the government to provide them with life jackets and a landing beach.

They said the landing beach will enhance their operations, and the life jackets will help save lives and property, while on the Volta Lake.

Dzemeni is a community along the banks of the Volta Lake in the South Dayi district of the Volta region. The community sits on a peninsula into Volta Lake. This makes it a very important town as far as transportation by boat and fishing are concerned.

The Dzemeni market is thus one of the biggest business markets in the Volta region. GBC News learnt that close to 140 boats and canoes mainly carting goods from the Afram plains and fishermen use the Dzemeni market shore on a weekly basis.

The sanitary conditions at the shore are not encouraging. A visit by the news team to the Tongor Dzemeni market shore revealed that not a single boat operator had a life jacket in case of emergencies.

According to them some lives have been lost due to the situation. Although they are not happy about the situation, they have improvised, using some kind of safety mechanisms as was demonstrated by Smaila and Awudu Gedu, who are Boat Operators.

The Chief Fisherman, Robert Loli, said major challenges confronting Boat Operators and Fishermen alike for which they want the government’s assistance include the provision of life jackets, the provision of a landing site/beach and other storage facilities.

According to Mr. Loli, the provision of these will have a positive impact on their operations and their lives.
