Two people have been arrested by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command for the unlawful possession of a large quantity of ammunition at a police checkpoint in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, identified as Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, his mate, were arrested on 26 December 2025 at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier. They were travelling in a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 5771-18 from Accra to Walewale, en route to Paga.

Police officers on duty stopped the bus for a routine inspection and conducted a thorough search. During the operation, officers discovered two containers concealed in the vehicle, containing a total of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

A further search of the bus led to the recovery of a bag hidden under the driver’s seat. The bag contained two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet and a pair of long boots.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. The bus and all items retrieved have been impounded as investigations continue.
