Police officers in the Volta Region have intercepted a large shipment of ammunition during a routine check at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa barrier.
The incident happened early on April 18, 2025, when a Hyundai bus traveling from Accra to Benin was stopped.
The police searched the bus and found 132 cartons of ammunition hidden under passengers’ luggage. These included 60 cartons of AAA cartridges (15,000 rounds) and 72 cartons of BB cartridges (18,000 rounds).

Two men were arrested: the driver, Abasou Fousseni, 45, and his assistant, Salisu Jalilu, 38. Both men claimed they didn’t know about the hidden ammunition. However, initial investigations showed the co-driver may have been responsible for loading it onto the bus.
The driver has since been granted bail so he could continue the journey with the passengers. The co-driver remains in police custody and is helping with the investigation. He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
