The New Juaben South Municipal Police Command is preparing to arraign 15 women before court over allegations of human trafficking and involvement in commercial sex work in Koforidua.
The suspects, aged between 15 and 35, were arrested following a complaint lodged by a sex worker, who reported being abused by her alleged trafficker and boyfriend after failing to meet daily earnings targets.
Police investigations led to an operation that resulted in the arrest of the women, as well as several landlords accused of converting their residential apartments into brothels. The landlords are alleged to have charged GH¢25 per day for the use of their rooms for sex work.
Speaking to the media at the Central Police Station in Koforidua, the New Juaben South Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Ransford Nsiah, cautioned landlords against renting out properties for commercial sex activities, warning that offenders would face the full rigours of the law.
The Municipal Crime Officer, ASP Asante Kusi Augustine, expressed concern about the involvement of minors, some as young as 15, in commercial sex work. He appealed to the public to support police efforts by providing information that could lead to the arrest of traffickers and the protection of vulnerable persons.
Police say investigations are ongoing, while steps are being taken to ensure that affected persons, particularly minors, are safeguarded as the legal process continues.
