The Director-General/Administration, Ghana Police Service, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, says the Police Service remains resolute in protecting Journalists to go about their duties safely.

He said Journalists play an important role in nation building for which reasons their safety would not be compromised.

He noted that a free media in Ghana will go a long way in strengthening the democratic credentials of the country.

“As an institution to manage life and property, the Police Service is always prepared to play our part to ensure the safety and security of all including journalists”.

COP Yohono made the point when he addressed Journalists at the commemoration of this year’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.

The event was also used to launch a Support Fund for Journalists who get injured in the course of their work.

Commenting on the Fund, COP Yohono, commended leadership of the GJA, for prioritizing welfare of journalists.

“I wish to commend leadership of the GJA for prioritizing the welfare of journalists and establishing the Journalists Support Fund to provide the needed assistance to journalists where they need it most”

COP Yohono, announced a twenty thousand cedis package of the Police Service to the Journalists Support Fund and hoped other institutions will do the same to ensure sustainability of the Fund.

“This time we are in haste to mention that we are making a token donation of 20, 000, as our contribution to the Fund”.

“It is our prayer that the Fund grows bigger over time, such that whenever it matters most any journalist who requires assistance will be able to access same” he added.
