The issue of bribery and corruption has been a plague within Ghana’s body politic, although there is rarely any evidence of the act.

During the Headlines Segment of the GTV’s Breakfast Show, a viral video, courtesy of Adom TV, showed the Juaben Municipal Chief Executive nominee demanding remuneration for money paid in order to ensure votes for the position.

Host Kafui Dey, along with his guests, Dr. Eric Oduro-Osae, Governance Expert & Director-General of Internal Audit Agency and Dr. John Mawutor, the Dean of Graduate Studies, UPSA delved more into the issue.

A press release from the Ghana Police PR Department indicated that the Juaben MCE Candidate, Dr. Alex Sarfo Kantanka, had been arrested on the 1st of November, 2021 to assist in further investigations.

The statement said although granted bail, investigations will continue until those involved in the alleged bribery are brought to justice.

Dr. Oduro-Osae begun the discussion by commending the Police and went on to state that those involved, that is giver, receiver and those who are aware of the exchange but remain silent, are guilty, and that the police should monitor these acts on all other levels and not just at the Assembly levels to serve as a deterrent.

“If we do not nip it in the bud, it will become a bigger animal that we cannot contend with”, he noted.

Dr. Oduro-Osae noted that if the nominee had not been apprehended and went on to assume office, he would be on the hunt to replenish the money lost for the sake of his ascension.

He pointed out that this scenario affects every Ghanaian and anyone found culpable should face the law, according to the criminal offense act.

In addition to that, Dr. Oduro-Osae explained that Ghanaian orientation, and patriotism are important to deal with the problem of the duplicity of human ideals and actual implementation.

Dr. John Mawutor, for his part spoke on the previous statements of Dr. Oduro-Osae, expressing how the effects of corruption had already reached a critical level.

“….It has become a big animal already’’, he posited.

According to him, the boldness of the action stems from the manner in which the people were appointed. He said those running for power must go through serious examination before they are put up for Candidacy.

Dr. Mawutor was thankful for actual virtual evidence and insisted that with this, the prosecution of the culprit could begin.

Dr. John Mawutor explained that although these acts have been a norm in Ghana, he believed that with the appointment of the new IGP, changes would be seen.
