Police to hand spot fines to indisciplined drivers

Ghana Police Service will at the end of June begin the implementation of Spot fines to tackle indiscipline on the roads.

The Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), May Obiri-Yeboah, announced this at a national dialogue in Accra on the menace of road accidents.

It was organised by the West Africa Nobles Forum (WANF).

Mrs Obiri-Yeboah said seven years after the passage of the road traffic regulation, it is time to operationalise the spot fine system.

Under the new system to be led by the Police, drivers who flout road traffic regulations for a number of times, will also have their licenses revoked.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), every year, the lives of more than one point two five million  people around the world are cut short as a result of road crashes.

Additionally, 90 per cent of deaths on the road occur in low and middle-income countries, and road accident injuries and  death rates are highest on the African continent, particularly in Ghana.

Road accidents have become a source of concern to most Ghanaians in contemporary times, due to its negative impact on human lives, property, environment and the economy at large.

Researchers have identified  gross indiscipline on the roads such as poor driving skills, drivers talking on mobile phones while driving, drunk driving as some of  the causes of road accidents.

According to the National Road Safety Commission, about 708 persons died from road accidents in  April 2017 alone.

Executive Director of the , NRSC, Mrs Obiri-Yeboah indicated that 90 per cent of road crashes in the country were due to human error and mostly preventable causes.

Chancellor of the Wisconsin International University College, and President of the West Africa Nobles Forum, Dr. Paul Fynn, urged the authorities to see to the enforcement of existing laws and regulations on road safety,  to ensure sanity on the roads.

He said offenders must be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others.

The Executive Secretary of WANF, Dr Otibu Asare, appealed to the First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, to add to her projects,  the construction of orthopedic hospitals to provide specialist treatment for road accident victims across the country.
