Premix Fuel Supply to some Landing Beach Committees, LBC’s, in the Central Region are to be suspended indefinitely following a directive by the Ministry for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.

A statement signed by the Administrator of the National Premix Fuel Secretariat, Nana Abrokwa Asare, said the decision is a punitive measure for light fishing and other illegal fishing practices by fishermen in the area after the closed season.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD) and its agencies consider these practices as a serious threat because of its negative impact on the marine stock and industry growth.

The affected Landing Beach Committees, LBC’s, are British Komenda, Moree, Abandze and Dago.

The Secretariat said it had taken notice of Premix Fuel, which is subsidized by the government, regrettably being used to fuel generators for the illicit practice of light fishing.

It said Ghana was nearly sanctioned by the European Union, EU and it continues to be at risk of a potential “red card”, which would indicate an outright ban from exports of fish to the European market should these illegal activities continue.
