President Akufo-Addo calls for protection of water bodies

President Akufo Addo has renewed calls for the protection of water bodies through sustainable farming practices and the avoidance of illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey.

He warned that the nation’s quest to achieve sustainable development goal six, will be jeopardized if Ghanaians continue to farm along with water bodies, cut down trees indiscriminately and practice galamsey.

President Akufo Addo, made the call at two separate programs at Yapei in the Savannah Region and Nalerigu in the North East Region, during the inauguration water systems for the two communities.

The project at Yapei will enhance access to potable water for more than eighteen thousand people in five communities.

According to the President, the inauguration of the Nalerigu water system forms part of a larger project in the North East and Northern Regions and will benefit over one hundred thousand people in four Municipal and district Assemblies.

These include West Mamprusi, East Mamprusi and Chereponi in the North East region as well as Saboba in the Northern Region.

The projects are under the sustainable rural water and sanitation projects being implemented in eleven out of the sixteen regions of the country with a forty-seven million dollar credit facility from the World Bank. President Akufo Addo expressed delight about the project, saying it will contribute towards access to water for all by 2030.

“I am glad that, the completion of this project will go towards the realization of SDG, which demands that, we ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030,” the President emphasized.

Residents in the beneficiary communities expressed delight for the projects saying it will enhance their livelihoods.
