President Akufo-Addo dissolves Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining

Akufo-Addo launches Ghana Smart Schools Project today

President Akufo-Addo has dissolved the Inter-ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining.

The committee which was established to clamp down on illegal small-scale mining also known as galamsey has been hit by a number of scandals including corruption allegations leveled against some of its leaders as well as claims of missing excavators seized from illegal small scale miners.

The Lands and Natural Resources Ministry in October last year said it was working to reconcile the number of excavators seized at the peak of the fight against illegal mining which had become a major subject of corruption.

Sources within Government say President Akufo-Addo has also decided to move the fight against illegal mining from the Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation to the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry which was the lead Ministry in the galamsey fight.

The President is in the coming days expected to hold a national dialogue with all stakeholders in the sector after dropping hints in his last state of the nation address.
